Sarah Cook Defends in Sword Attack
Sarah Cook, instructed by AGI Criminal Solicitors, successfully represented her client following initial charges of attempted murder, grievous bodily harm with intent, threatening with a knife and attempting to escape lawful custody.
The proceedings were lengthy, the offences being committed in 2018, and involved detailed consideration of various provisions of the Mental Health Act 1983.
Defending the case, Sarah Cook said that her client is 'deeply sorry' for his behaviour, which he has limited recollection of. Although known to the mental health services previously, he had 'drifted off the treatment radar' and was not complying with medication.
It is important to note that the Doctors treating him say that it is likely he is suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, and that he was mentally unwell at the time.
Sentencing His Honour Judge Conrad QC , noted that "offences of this nature would normally warrant a very long sentence of imprisonment, potentially an extended sentence to protect the Public. However, it is apparent that you were seriously mentally ill at the time, so much so that it was not possible for the police to interview you until nearly a year after your arrest." later sentencing the client to a Hospital Order.
