Jonathan Greer Appointed Deputy Judge of the Upper Tribunal
Kenworthy’s Chambers are pleased to announce that Jonathan Greer has been appointed as a Deputy of the Upper Tribunal.
The Upper Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) is responsible for judicial reviews of immigration and asylum decisions made by the Home Office and handling appeals against decisions made by the First-tier Tribunal.
In this new judicial role, Jonathan Greer will be making decisions on important cases such as individuals’ rights to enter the UK, asylum and visa applications.
The assignment was made by the Judicial Appointments Commission which is responsible for selecting candidates for judicial office in England and Wales, and some tribunals with UK-wide powers. It is the Judicial Appointments Commission’s responsibility to select people of good character based on merit.
Reflecting on this achievement, Jonathan Greer said, “It is a great honour to have been appointed. This stands out for me as a personal career highlight. Being able to contribute to the development of law is an exciting prospect which, as someone engrossed in legislation, promises to be most fulfilling.”
Decisions made by the Upper Tribunal are published and contribute to case law, thus the decisions Judges make set legal precedents that develop the law over time.
Speaking about Jonathan Greer’s Upper Tribunal appointment, Practice Manager Maria Rushworth said, “Huge congratulations to Jonathan, another notable achievement in an impressive legal career.”
The role is part-time so he will continue working as an Immigration Barrister in addition to his other part-time roles as an Employment Judge and Judge in the First Tier Tribunal in the Immigration and Asylum Chamber.
