Criminal Team Statement on ‘No Returns’

Kenworthy's Chambers | March 30, 2022

In support of the Criminal Bar Association and fellow members of the Northern Circuit vote on 'No Returns', Kenworthy's Chambers’ Criminal Team will no longer be accepting returns in the Crown Court on AGFS cases from 11th April 2022 until further notice.

AGFS cases are publicly funded defence cases for all types of offences. 'No Returns' means refusing to accept instructions to appear at any hearing where another advocate has already been instructed.

In practice, ‘No Returns’ will stop the convention of covering for colleagues on cases where the court has double booked them, usually with insufficient time to adequately prepare within regular working hours.

This will allow our Criminal Barrister Team to focus solely on their own work. The continuity of representation will aid our Criminal Barristers in achieving the best results for our clients.

Kenworthy’s Chambers remains committed to retaining the Legal Services Commission's Quality Mark for the Bar. Our Management Committee will continue to closely monitor the quality of service and members of Kenworthy’s Chambers continue to comply with the Bar Standards Board’s Code of Conduct for Barristers.

For further information and availability of our Criminal Barristers call our Criminal Clerks Paul Mander and Greg Highton on 0161 832 4036, email [email protected] or [email protected].
