Kenworthy’s Chambers at the Greater Manchester Pro Bono Awards

Kenworthy's Chambers | December 11, 2024
Kenworthy’s Chambers’ Barristers and staff took a short walk up Bridge Street to attend the inaugural Greater Manchester Pro Bono Awards at the Manchester Civil Justice Centre.

It was a historic night for chambers because we were shortlisted in two categories. The first was Chambers of the Year 2024 and the second saw our Employment Barrister Matthew Todd make it as a finalist in the Chambers’ Individual of the Year category.

Speaking about his nomination, Matthew Todd said, “The Pro Bono Awards was a great celebration and opportunity to honour the work of all those involved in Pro Bono in Greater Manchester. For me, it was fantastic to be shortlisted alongside such experienced, highly celebrated Barristers! A proud moment to remember in my career.”

Also in attendance was Deputy Head of Chamber Patrick Cassidy who was mentioned as the presenter revealed why Kenworthy’s was selected for the Chambers of the Year shortlist, citing his pro bono work where he represented a family in an inquest in Manchester completing eight hours without fee because they had extremely limited means.

Also in attendance, Gita Patel and Craig Holmes represented our Immigration, Asylum and Nationality department. Craig had previously highlighted the importance and value of pro bono work, saying: “Both myself and all of the Immigration team at Kenworthy's recognise that, in a climate where barriers to people accessing justice are being raised ever higher, pro bono work is a necessary mechanism. At Kenworthy’s Chambers, we are attempting to redress the balance and ensure that as many people as possible have access to expert advice and representation. Often in cases that change the course of their lives.”

The first-of-its-kind event was hosted by the Greater Manchester Pro Bono Committee in the affectionately nicknamed ‘filing cabinet’ building. The chosen conference room was one of the parts of the Manchester Civil Justice Centre with an overhang and as a result, had fantastic views overlooking the River Irwell. It made for a great place to network and socialise before and after the ceremony. The Greater Manchester Pro Bono Committee said, “Huge congratulations and thanks for all the excellent work that you are doing.”

Thanks to the Greater Manchester Pro Bono Committee for putting on the awards night and thanks to Matthew Todd for speaking with us about his nomination.
