Cell Site Analysis as Forensic Science

Online Seminar | October 16, 2024 | 4:00 PM

‘Cell Site Analysis as Forensic Science’ is a free CPD training course hosted by CCL Solutions Group Expert Witness and Research Scientist, Dr Matt Tart. This seminar will take place on Wednesday 16th October 2024 from 4-5pm. The sign-up form is at the bottom of this page.

Who is this seminar for?

This seminar is aimed at Criminal Lawyers and Criminal Barristers who provide advocacy in Criminal Law proceedings where cell site analysis is used.

If you work in the criminal justice system (CJS) as a part of a defence or prosecution team on cases that examine forensic evidence from telecommunication records, then this seminar is for you!

What does this seminar cover?

The ‘Cell Site Analysis as Forensic Science’ online seminar will bring you up to date with the current thinking and requirements vis a vis cell site analysis as forensic science. This includes how legal teams can best utilise cell site evidence, and the pitfalls and opportunities arising from cell site analysis.

The session focuses on how to provide sound inference cell site analysis (based on logic, balance, transparency, and robustness), and spot unsound evidence. It also provides the back story on why cell site analysis is now increasingly in focus.

The Forensic Science Regulator (FSR) code was implemented in 2023, defining cell site analysis as a forensic science activity. While the FSR has stated they will not enforce the code in relation to cell site analysis until October 2025, the code still represents the standard for cell site analysis in England and Wales.

Criminal procedure rules and CPD apply to all expert evidence and require opinion to be robust. Robustness is dependent on the validity of the methods used and the competence of the examiner.

The ‘Cell Site Analysis as Forensic Science’ seminar will provide you with an in-depth look at methodologies and competence, with some real-life case examples serving to highlight best practice – and lack of! – and its impact on proceedings.
